My week working at the Daily Mail

My week working at the Daily Mail was in one word: AMAZING!! This is the work experience I was looking forward to as it has always been my biggest ambition to work in a newspaper; I blamed my childhood obsession with The All News Adventure of Superman. In my head I convinced myself that I am Lois Lane and superman will sweep me up, I can dream can’t i.

As I got my Daily pass and come out of the glass door, the magic elevator carried me up to a cosmopolitan metropolises self-contained glass roof. A Costa Coffee was in one corner while a water fall was in the reception area (yes a waterfall – it made the area smell like a swimming pool). I couldn’t help but gawk at the seer sight, glass wall on every floor. I had to take some serious deep breath to calm me down. I was met with a lady call India and she lead me to elevator and took me up to the news room (a huge massive area where all the journalist are glued to the TV monitor of sky and BBC news and rows and rows of news desk) where she introduced me to Liz Hemming’s who ended up being my supervisor for that week. I was than leads into the fashion cardboard which would eventually be my very own office!! How amazing. I was told I could go down anytime to the Costa Coffee on the ground floor and bring up any drinks or foods. Everyone was really nice and so lovely.

My hours for the week were 10-6 and the journey time was so much shorter than at Boudoir PR, thank god! Most days I would simple do admin works such as filing paper works into folders, writing returns samples back to the correct address and generally researching on the internet. I have to say I was on cloud 9 (even cloud 11) as I was giving jobs which I know was my strength and I could shine.

On Tuesday and Friday I was allowed onto the fashion studio which was AMAZING! Eliza Scarborough who is the fashion and style editor was doing a photo shoot on 8 difference way to wear a piece of clothes, i.e.: A Zara blue skirt and blazer. We had a little bit of drama as the model looked nothing like the Polaroid off her. I had Eliza having a mini panic but once she had her make-up and hair done, she was stunning. The model was really sweet and I was talking to her trying to make her felt at ease (which Eliza later thanked me for). I was there just to take notes on what brands (mostly Zara) the model wore in the correct orders and steaming any creases out of clothes. I really really enjoyed myself and everyone including the photographer made an effort to be nice to me.

My week at the Daily Mail was just a dream come true, I wanted to soak up as much of the atmosphere as I could. It was my perfect week as I was quite sad to leave but the team gave a goodie bag of approx. £50 worth of beauty product which was AMAZING.

I hope i don’t get into trouble posting this…

On a desert island, the pigeon post will bring only 1 publication every month.

…Which one would you choose and why?

When i applied to UCA, we was asked to write your reponse and why, it was part of the portfolio assesment This is my answer:

I would choose Vogue because I believe in the words:

“Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street; fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.”

Coco Chanel

Vogue encompasses the fantasy of fashion – how by reading an article or looking at a page on clothes can whisk you away from whatever situation you are in, and you can imagine wearing the clothes and feeling beautiful about yourself. I myself know that I can’t wear the clothes but I can imagine how they would look on me and how they would feel. In the October 2008 issue of vogue, ‘Fantastic Fantasy Fashion’ was the theme throughout the special edition, it had Kate Moss on the cover covered in warm green fur. Throughout the issue was certain aspects of ‘fantasy fashion’, like a fashion fairy tales and costume balls fantasy photo shoot, articles on how to feel special and glamorous. That edition of Vogue to me encompassed a fantasy about fashion, you can read a fairy tales on a fashion brand and immediately get swept in it. It can make you feel glamorous about yourself (even if you stuck on a desert island) and lighten up how you feel about yourself.

Now being stuck on a desert island, I imagine myself to be very lonely and to be completely isolated from western civilization (how will I cope without Starbucks?). To have a pigeon post as my only form of communication with the outside world is a very lonely experience, I imagine this being like the world of Harry Potter where on summer holiday when Harry would return to his muggle (non-magical) guardian and his only link to his ‘magical life’ would be his devoted owl sending his parcels and letters from his school friends.

I would have a camp fire burning and I see the endless sea wave crashing with no land or anything else in sight, then out of the blue in the distance I see my pigeon post flying toward me. Suddenly I wouldn’t feel so alone anymore and for the first time in a while as the bird brings me my publication, something that will feel my heart with joy and my mind with fantasy. Turning once again to the words of Coco Chanel; ‘A girl should be two things: classy and fabulous.’ With a copy of Vogue, I am both.

All that Fashion jazz

A few week ago we had to write about why we want to be fashion journalist. Here what i wrote:

As a young child I was a huge superman fan! In my head I would dream that I was Lois Lane and I could call out ‘superman!’ If I was ever in trouble, I could fly above the city and be a groundbreaking journalist. Of course this was all make believe and not a reality, still it a strike a huge core in me. As I got older I reads the very classic books series ‘Sweet valley high’, in my dream I convinced myself I was the real life character ‘Elizabeth Wakefield’, Straight A student who was caring and determines – someone who wanted to be a writer as well. I could imagine all the exciting adventure I could go on and under-covered hidden plots and evil deeds.

I love Fashion, it a huge passion of mine. As a child I would draws wedding dress and play dressing up with my mum clothes.

Growing up I would read magazines I couldn’t help myself. Reading magazines such as Sugar and Smash Hits was a favourite pastime for me. It was in my late teenager years that I decided ‘I want to do that’, I wanted to be fashion writer. I will admit I wasn’t sure how I was going to accomplished this, until one day I found a blog online called ‘Catwalk-queen.net’ (now it catwalkqueen.tv) written by Gemma Cartwright. She was a student at the London College Of Fashion studying Fashion Journalist. Bingo! I found my open door and while looking on the college website I found an Access course which will enable you to go on further and higher. This sounded like the perfect opportunity for me, not long after I discovered UCA and a campus, which was just outside, where I live and it has fashion journalism. I can imagine myself sitting on the front row watching catwalk shows and creating my own piece, travelling and meeting people. One day I could be the next Anna Wintor.
